History of St. Patrick’s Day
So why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and how did it start? St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Irish heritage and Ireland’s patron saint, Patrick. But, St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish!
He was actually born in Britain in 387. His real name wasn’t Patrick either! He was born with the name, Maewyn Succat. But he later changed it to Patricius or Patrick. And, the color green wasn’t always Patrick’s, or Ireland’s color either! It was blue! It wasn’t until 1798, during the Irish rebellion when supporters used the color green to symbolize their fight for independence, that the color was then forever linked with Patrick and all things Irish. Tradition has it, that if you wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, you will be invisible to Leprechauns. But if you don’t wear green, a leprechaun will be able to see you, and he will give you a pinch! A Leprechaun is a small mischievous character from old Irish folklore, and according to legend, if you catch a Leprechaun, he has to tell you where he’s hidden his pot of gold.
When St. Patrick was 16, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland. He was forced to be a slave for 6 years before he escaped and returned home. He became a priest, and then, was made a Bishop. One day, Patrick had a vision that told him to bring Christianity to Ireland. So, he returned to Ireland to spread his faith to the Irish people. Patrick made the shamrock famous. He used it to help people understand God. He said the clover symbolized the Holy Trinity and demonstrated how 3 things, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, could be separate entities, yet one and the same. According to legend, by spreading Christianity, Patrick drove all the snakes from the Emerald Isle. And, to this day, there are no snakes in Ireland.
Patrick died on March 17, which would come to be known as St. Patrick’s Day. When Irish immigrants living in the United States began organizing parades to show their Irish pride, St. Patrick’s Day changed from a somber religious holiday to the spirited celebration we have come to know and love. And, to this day, on March 17th, Ireland’s traditions and beloved Saint are still celebrated all over the world.
