Anti-racism protesters outnumber far-right in Walthamstow

Counter-protesters claimed they had “scared off” far-right ­extremists after taking to the streets in their thousands on Wednesday night. Police had prepared for the worst after thugs threatened violent protests outside the offices of law centres ­providing advice to immigrants. However, they were far outnumbered by anti-racism demonstrators. Thousands of counter-demonstrators gathered in Walthamstow, east London, ahead of a planned protest, with groups chanting “Whose streets? Our streets!” and “Free Palestine”. About 500 anti-fascist demonstrators gathered on Glossop Road in Sheffield but there was no sign of anti-immigration agitators. There were 50 anti-immigrant demonstrators in Southampton but they were outnumbered by 200 anti-racism campaigners.
