In Iboja’s singing we hear childhood memories from the Slovakian town Mikulas, where she, as the eldest of five siblings, grew up hoping for a free world. Back in the 1920s, the horrors of World War I were replaced by faith in democracy. But just ten years later, everything looked differently for her and her Jewish family.
As an idealistic communist, Iboja fought against the Nazi threat until the ground burned beneath her. Together with her sister, she fled to Hungary in 1942, where they hid with friends until they were caught and brought to Auschwitz. Everything was taken from the prisoners, but the Nazis couldn’t take away Ibojas voice. In the concentration camp, that was to become the symbol of inhumanity of the 20th cen
