Robert Fuchs - Romanze Op. 47, No. 13

Robert Fuchs (Feb 15, 1847 - Feb 19, 1927) was an Austrian composer and music teacher. He studied, and would later go on to teach, at the Vienna Conservatory. Fuchs lived a quiet life and did little to promote his compositions. He refused to arrange concerts at times. During his tenure as a professor at the Vienna Conservatory he taught many pupils who’d go one to become great composers in their own right including Gustav Mahler and Jean Sibelius. This piece is the 13th of 24 pieces from his Op. 47 work Jugendalbum. Simple in nature (as most of the pieces I play these days are), it reminds me of some of the Sonnets by Panchenko. One thing I really need to work on when playing pieces like this is the dynamics. I remember one of my teachers once said piano dynamic markings don’t equate to soft. You have to adjust the dynamic relative to the context of the passage within the composition as a whole. I felt like this piece turned out a bit shallow in terms of its dynamics and full-ness. I need to start learning how to play with more depth if that even makes sense. Sheet music: ,(Fuchs,_Robert)
