SLS Rocket’s Universal Stage Adapter Ready for Testing
A test version of the universal stage adapter for NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket has been on the move at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and is now ready for testing. Following its delivery to Marshall by barge from nearby Decatur, teams moved and installed it onto the test stand in Building 4619 on March 12. Standing 32.4 feet tall and measuring 27.6 feet in diameter at its largest point, the universal stage adapter will connect NASA’s Orion spacecraft to the core stage and provide additional cargo space for the future Block 1B configuration of the mega-rocket, beginning with Artemis IV. Leidos is the lead contractor for the adapter, which is a first-time build for the SLS rocket. For more information about SLS, visit
