The modern perception of the “Italian tenor“ is very much formed by the operas and performance practice of the 19th and early 20th centuries. With the arias on his album Tormento d’amore, Ian Bostridge demonstrates the important place that the tenor voice held in Italian opera from the mid-17th to the mid-18th century – often thought of as the era of the castrato. It was at this time that the “center of gravity“ of Italian opera shifted from Venice, where the genre originated, to Naples.
