The Mittelhau Formal Exercise for the Messer

Mittelhau bricht Unterstich (The middle cut breaks a thrust from below) When someone thrusts at you from below, so put your right foot forward and take your Messer in the Middle Cut. And cut crossways at his Messer and swerve the thrust aside. And turn your Messer at his Messer and step with your left foot forward and rotate the Messer around your head and cut or stab (Glasgow Fechtbuch fol. 26r). Schlechtñ Versatzung bricht Oberstich (The simple displacement breaks a thrust from above) When someone wants to strike or stab you, so settle yourself. Put your left foot forward and hold your Messer in your hand near your right hip. And when he cuts over to your head, step to him with the simple displacement where the long edge is above. And jump with your right foot to him at his left side and cut him to the head or any place where you can reach him, so he is yours (id. fol. 25v). Lem Stuck vom der Verkerter Handt (A wrist cut from the inverted hand) If someone cuts above to your head, so displace with the flat and on the nail and send his messer away, so that he must strike, and when he then will strike, then seek the nearest and pull the arm off, as stands depicted here (Codex Wallerstein fol. 31r). Demonstrators: Chris Bertell, Journeyman, and Chad Cordero, Apprentice.
