This color film is about the 1971 Winston 500 at the Alabama Motor Speedway at Talladega, Lincoln, Alabama. This was the very first Talladega race under Winston sponsorship. Richard Petty speaks (2:24). Donnie Allison (2:35). Bobby Allison; he speaks on racing (2:41). Wednesday May 12, fans watch the top cars qualify (3:11). Richard Petty; Bobby Issac; Donnie Allison (3:25). Friday May 14, cars still race for position (3:49). Walter Ballard of Houston speaks (4:06). James Hilton at the pre-race banquet speaks (4:42). Saturday May 15, a parade (5:41). Drivers watch the sky as it rains (5:56). Sunday, May 16, 1971, the day of the race - opening festivities with marching women, old cars, the pace car (6:05). People, cars, tires on the day of the race (6:30). Last minute preparations to cars (6:49). Richard Petty, car 43, speaks (7:07). Cars in the starting position (7:26). The pace car goes around the track twice with the state’s First Lady, Mrs. Cornelia Wallace (7:56). Race begins with the green flag (8:22). Fans watch as the race goes on (8:44). Cars go round and round the track (9:01). Inside a racing car, POV shot through the windshield (9:59). Buddy Baker, #11 is out in front in his Dodge (10:33). Richard Petty in a sky blue Plymouth (10:47). Petty’s car blows a tire and he hits the wall (10:57). Cars come into the pits to get repairs, new tires, and fuel (11:10). Petty’s car is out (11:39). Buddy Baker, #11 leaves the pit (11:44). Dave Marcis, #71, leaves pit row (11:48). Donnie Allison, #21, in his 1969 Mercury Cyclone and his brother Bobby, #12, in his Mercury Cyclone, come to pit row (11:54). Cars in a turn on the track (12:01). Cars race by (12:37). Race goes on (13:12). POV dashboard shot shows how fast the cars are going (13:46). Cars make a turn (14:09). Cars drop out; go into the pits (14:27). Race is heating up as finish approaches (15:15). Tailgating at 200mph is tricky (15:52). Car overheats and spins out, it’s Dave Marcis in his Dodge (16:08). Caution flag followed by the Green flag and the race continues (16:27). Final lap (16:43). Donnie Allison wins, his brother Bobby takes second (17:05). Victory circle (17:20). Bill Smith presents Donnie Allison with the trophy (17:28). Empty track (17:43). End credits (17:50). Twenty-nine thousand people saw Donnie Allison (racing for the Wood Brothers racing team) defeat his brother Bobby (racing for Holman-Moody) by six car lengths in the first official race for new sponsor Winston. The race took three hours and thirty-two minutes to complete. Seven cautions slowed the race for forty-five laps. Other finishers in the top ten included: Buddy Baker (driving for Petty Enterprises), Pete Hamilton, Fred Lorenzen, Jim Vandiver, James Hylton, Bill Dennis, Dave Marcis, and Larry Baumel. There were 45 lead changes between four drivers and Dave Marcis made his first race with the car #71. Marcis was a contender for the win until his engine blew on lap 181; marking the first good finish of a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race on live television.[2][3] The prize purse was $145,040; Donnie Allison received $31,140 for winning, while last-place finisher Bub Strickler got $1,000.
