Björn Andrésen, Sospiri

Fifth and last in a series. “Sospiri“ is the Italian plural noun for “sighs.“ Edward Elgar composed this very moving work shortly before the outbreak of World War I. There are many sighs in “Death In Venice,“ to me, the greatest film ever made. This video contains several scenes which will draw sighs from the viewer who understands the depth and sentimentality of this masterpiece film. The accompanying music sets the mood for sighing. There is a truly heart-melting back-story from the film set, as recorded in Dirk Bogarde’s autobiography, “An Orderly Man.“ He writes that Björn told him that he (Björn) thought Silvana Mangano (Tadzio’s mother in the film) to be a most beautiful woman, so Dirk suggested that Björn should tell her so, and that they would tell her together. So they both knelt down before her.
