Head gardener at Lowther Castle Andrea Brunsendorf picks her best October plant, which is the very hardy Vernonia arkansana, also known as Vernonia crinita. It tolerates very wet soils and it’s a great late flowering plant and butterflies and bees love it. Deer or rabbits will also leave it alone.
