Is It Possible to Hover Around Like in Back to the Future?

If it’s really “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.“ then why don’t we still have all the cool futuristic stuff from popular movies? Like the hoverboard from Back to the Future 2! Remember, the one when Marty McFly goes to the future and rides it to escape some bullies?  Hoverboards don’t fly but sort of float in the air. It’s actually called levitating.  Now, in the movie, they made the board and the actors look like they are levitated by supporting the actors on wires. Then the video editors digitally erased these wires in post-production. So they made it look like the actors were standing on the hoverboard when in fact, they were the ones holding it up with straps. That’s how you get a hoverboard when you are a character in a motion picture. But what do we do to get one in real life?  The film came to theaters in 1989.
