Favorite Artists: Ruffino Tamayo

One of Mexico’s more modern painters, Ruffino Tamayo was born in Oaxaca in 1899 and lived a long life as artist and wrestler, lasting until 1991. He was influenced by all the popular movements of the time -- cubism, impressionism, fauvism -- but he kept his work distinctly Mexican in flavor. He left Mexico for three years when he was 27, and came back to Mexico to have a successful show. The music is Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles.“
