Putin sends Russian car to Kim Jong-un in possible violation of UN Security Council resolutions

푸틴, 김정은에 러시아산 자동차 선물 안보리 제재 위반 가능성 Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently presented North Korea’s leader with a Russian vehicle. Pundits say the gift may represent a deepening of Moscow-Pyongyang relations, that could also contravene UN Security Council resolutions. Our North Korean affairs correspondent Kim Jung-sil reports. Is an old tradition back? Just like Joseph Stalin who presented Kim Il-sung with a limousine back in 1948, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with a car on Sunday. This is according to North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Tuesday. Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un’s younger sister who practically acts as a de-facto spokesperson for him, said the car was a “clear indication“ of the close friendship between the two leaders. The gift isn’t a total surprise considering Kim Jong-un showed interest in Putin’s car back in September when he visited Russia’s Far East. There, he joined the Russian president to sit in the back of Putin’s Aurus Senat, a massive 7-ton armored limo. Few details were given by Pyongyang about the car except that it was Russian-made, but the Kremlin later confirmed on Tuesday that the car was made by Russian luxury car brand, Aurus. For leaders around the world, a car is linked directly to their safety. Back in 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump also showed his presidential Cadillac, nicknamed “the Beast,“ to the North’s leader. With concerns rising on arms transfers between Pyongyang and Moscow, the “luxury car gift“ may entail a much bigger concern: a Russian decision not to abide by UN Security Council resolutions on Pyongyang. UNSC resolutions ban member-states from the “direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer“ of luxury goods to North Korea, including cars. A senior official at South Korea’s unification ministry condemned North Korea on Tuesday for publicly announcing the gift, while calling on Russia to realize its responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
