On the 4th of November 1922, Howard Carter discovered the almost intact tomb of the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The world was stunned. Overnight, the pharaoh, Carter, and Carter’s financial backer, Lord Carnarvon, became household names and celebrities.
Since then, many photos of the discovery have been circulated, especially nowadays, with the help of technology and social media. However, few know the man behind these photos which have immortalised this impressive discovery. His name is Harry Burton. Taking his first photographs soon after the discovery in 1922, Burton spent nearly ten years photographing Tutankhamun’s tomb and its treasures, mesmerising the world with images of this majestic find, while preserving it for posterity.
I have been collecting Burton’s photographs for quite some time. In this video, I compile some of these photos, some of which have been colorised. Burton has truly done an amazing job. His work is a goldmine, not merely for modern archaeologists and Egyptologists, but also for anyone passionate about this great ancient civilisation. Enjoy this compilation.
