Research and restoration of the beaded embroidery

Watch this short film about the study and restoration of two strips of polychrome patterned embroidery - these are rare decorative items of a woman’s funerary costume. They were found in a burial found in the “royal“ barrow 1 of the world-famous burial mound, Filippovka 1, in the Orenburg region in the South Urals. The project brought together a large number of scientists, researchers and art historians. You can read more about the stages of research of archaeological costumes on the page of the project. There, you can also see photos before the restoration and watch a series of interviews with the participants: Thanks to the painstaking work and colossal efforts of art conservators, fragments of the embroidery that adorned the dress of a Sarmatian priestess can be now seen at the exhibition “Gold of the Sarmatian Chieftains“ at the Main Building of the Pushkin Museum until 8 October 2023. It is one of the iconic items at the exhibition. After the exhibition, the item will be returned to Orenburg and included in the main collection of the Orenburg Governor’s Museum of History and Local Lore.
