TransLink is of course the orchestrator of the money siphoning scheme that is the inflated fare evasion fines as they are the ones that arbitrarily set the fine amount at a whooping $173 and seemingly direct their enforcement branch such as Transit Security and police to take a mass ticketing approach.
Who decided on the random, arbitrary fine amount of $173? A 3 zone ticket cost $ yet the penalty for having an expired ticket, not having a ticket, etc is $173 which is a multiplier of over 100 times making it unreasonable and unjust. At most the fine should be $50 or even less than that.
The
...psychology of having the excessive fine is understandable as it acts as a possibly effective deterrent but that still doesn’t justify it especially considering that a lot of people that get fined are homeless and/or vulnerable people as well as those that are new to the country and teenagers who might not at the time be financially stable.
