The Visual Style of Past & Present - Only Yesterday

Only Yesterday (おもひでぽろぽろ / Omoide Poro Poro) is a Studio Ghibli film from 1991 directed by Isao Takahata. It’s an overlooked part of the catalogue, forced to compete with the more fantastical works when it’s a slow-paced melodrama. And while it’s not my favorite Ghibli film, it is a masterpiece in its own right - especially when it comes to looking at how visual presentation helps to create meaning. We’re looking at color & design here, and hopefully it inspires you to watch this beautiful film.
