In Full: Starmer accuses Sunak of ‘fantasy economics’ on defence
Sir Keir Starmer accused Rishi Sunak of “fantasy economics” as the two leaders clashed over defence spending at Prime Minister’s Questions.
Mr Sunak took aim at Sir Keir over Labour’s failure to match the Tories’ pledge to increase spending on the UK’s armed forces to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030.
Labour has said it would try to hit the target but only when the economic circumstances allowed.
Mr Sunak said it was “clear that you simply can’t trust Labour with our country’s security”.
But Sir Keir hit back and claimed that he was “the first to call for 2.5 per cent”. He told the Prime Minister that delivering on the spending pledge “needs a credible plan, not his fantasy economics”.
