30th video on my channel!
“Wake“ from Dir en grey’s TOUR 16-17 FROM DEPRESSION TO______[mode of MACABRE] as requested by ZuuuHaN. Please read the annotations if you have a moment!
Translation by me.
Annotations:
“I learned about your past“ - This might also be “I knew about your past“, even though personally I would say it’s more on the “I learned“ side (if not I would expect it to be 知っていた, not 知った)
“I stare at myself growing bigger on the ground“ - Kyo uses very smart imagery here in my opinion. Even though the word for “growing bigger“ is rather “expand“, I think this line carries the image of him falling and therefore as he gets closer to the ground his shadow grows bigger. I hope I was able to transport this image into English.
“I’ll be holding you - I’ll be watching you - I’ll be loving you - I’ll be thinking of you“
I want to make clear that this might as well be simple present (I hold you - I watch you - I love you - I think of you) or just present progressive (Holding you - Watching you - Loving you - Thinking of you) as well as the future tense I translated it into. I think it makes most sense as it is safe to assume he dies in this song, and this might be parts of his last words to her (hence the quotation marks). However, this stays an assumption on my part!
4:33 - 4:51 Disclaimer here. These are, once again, lyrics Kyo changed so I could only translate this part by hearing what he is singing by ear. I consulted with multiple friends and we kind of agreed on something, but I still feel like at the end of the day all we can do (and are doing) is guess what he might be singing.
So there’s a chance I could be very off here!
This is what I think he is singing:
さよなら愛しき雨よ
心の中で洗った
願いを死蔵させない
いつかは叶うよね
sayonara itoshiki ame yo
kokoro no naka de aratta
negai wo shizou sasenai
itsuka wa kanau yo ne
