Bellingham, Washington:
Bellingham, Washington, incorporated in 1903, consolidated four settlements: Bellingham, Whatcom, Fairhaven, and Sehome. It takes its name from Bellingham Bay, named by George Vancouver in 1792, for Sir William Bellingham.
Geographically, Bellingham sits 90 north of Seattle, only 20 miles away from the Canadian border, on the shores of Bellingham Bay. On clear days it is backdropped by Mount Baker. Bellingham is the last major city before the Washington coastline meets the Canadian border. The City of Bellingham, which serves as the county seat of Whatcom County, is at the center of a uniquely picturesque area offering a rich variety of recreational, cultural, educational and economic activities. Bellingham is also the start of the Alaska Marine Highway System and is the only port served by the system in the contiguous US.
With 135 miles of pristine Salish Sea coastline, Bellingham offers a variety of marine related economies and tourism activities. It is well known as one of the best places in the world to view orca, or killer whales, in their natural habitat as several resident groups of Orca inhabit the areas around the San Juan islands year round. Fishing and marine tourism play significant roles in Bellingham’s economy.
Year-round hiking is also plentiful in the Bellingham area. Combining the trails in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, Chuckanut Mountains, North Cascades National Park, and Whatcom County, this region has hundreds of miles of trails to explore. The City of Bellingham also offers an extensive system of hiking trails through city parks and greenways, where both water and mountain views are plentiful. This includes Whatcom Falls Park which is featured in this video.
Bellingham is also well know for its award–winning restaurants and culinary scene. Bellingham and Whatcom County is a foodie’s paradise. Restaurants all over Whatcom County take pride in using locally sourced ingredients from nearby farms and local waters. Craft beverage culture means many craft breweries to choose from, but also cideries, distilleries, wineries, local kombucha, and more.
With a population today of 95,000 Bellingham offers everything a major city should, while not feeling congested! Fresh air and wide-open spaces are plentiful, making Bellingham a true hidden gem in the US Pacific Northwest.
With that all said, I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy 40 minutes of peaceful, relaxing shots, as we travel to, from, and throughout, Bellingham, Washington!
