There are some pretty odd wedding traditions out there. Shoving wedding cake in the bride and groom’s faces, overly rehearsed first dances and embarrassing speeches. But you probably haven’t heard of these; Spitting in the bride’s face! Robbing your in-law’s house or being covered in pig’s blood! Here are the 8 Weirdest Wedding Traditions Around The World.
1. Scotland
In rural areas of Scotland, there is a pre-marital custom called Blackening. The Bride or the groom or both are captured by friends and family, covered in food and sticky substances, and paraded around in an open cart whilst the captures bang pots and pans to call people’s attention. The onlookers then donate money to help pay for the wedding. The most famous Blackening was when Melanie Richmond was covered in tripe, pig’s blood, and feathers and marched from Elgin to Aberdeen over the course of five days.
2. China.
A month before the wedding, the bride must cry for an hour a day, after 10 days the mother of the bride cries with her, after another 10 days, the grandmother cries with them and at the end of the month, every female in the family cries along with the bride. My wife did this too... she’s not Chinese though...
3. Kenya.
Brides of the Massai tribe are between 13-16 years old, they start their big day by having their head shaved and lamb fat rubbed into their scalp. The bride’s father then spits on her face to wish her luck, after the ceremony the bride’s father spits on the groom to wish him luck too. when the couple leaves, members of the groom’s family repeatedly insult the bride to ward off bad spirits and bad fortunes.

4. Mauritania.
In Mauritania, a fat woman is a sign of a wealthy family and beauty, so instead of slimming down to fit in their wedding dress, Mauritanian women fatten up to get a husband. The tradition is called Leblouh and it consists of overfeeding women over a period of months, sometimes starting at a very young age, girls are force-fed up to 16,000 calories a day to make them more desirable to a richer groom, that could then save the family from poverty.
5. Mongolia.
Getting a date for a wedding is important in every culture, but in Mongolia, it is not important because of the venue or the caterers, in Mongolia, it is considered important to aid the success of the marriage. Both families will discuss possible months, they will then consult a Mongolian calendar, a monk, or a fortune teller to ensure the date picked is an auspicious one.
6. Zambia
The Bemba tribe in Zambia had a pre-nuptial ceremony in which the groom-to-be must enter his in-law’s bedroom, remove the bedding and look under the bed and take any valuables he sees, he must then go to the living room and remove the sofa cushions and retrieve whatever he finds, then he goes to the kitchen, where he must eat everything he finds if any food is left it will be sent back home with him. This ceremony is done to show the complete acceptance of the groom into the family.
7. Sweden
During the wedding reception in Sweden, if the bride leaves the room, all the guests rush up to steal a kiss from the groom before she comes back. If the groom leaves the room the guests are allowed to steal a kiss from the bride.
8. New Tradition
There seems to be a new trend starting now that may very well end up becoming a tradition. Bridesmaids from all over the globe are now taking photos with the bride whilst lifting their dresses to show their behinds. It’s unknown exactly where this trend originated but it is believed that it comes from a photo that went viral of some bridesmaids joking about a time the bride came out of the bathroom with her dress caught in her knickers.
