JUST A LITTLE BIT - ROSCO GORDON (1959) on Vee Jay Records 45 RPM
This song is often thought to have been written by Memphis-born Rosco Gordon, although the writing credit on this 45 is to D. (Del) Gordon, a relation to Rosco.
Rosco is known to have claimed that he had provided a producer from King Records, Ralph Bass, a demo copy of the song and that Bass lifted the song from a the demo tape and beat Gordon to the copyright office for registration.
The song first appeared in 1959 by Tiny Topsy on a the Federal label, a subsidiary of King Records, with Bass’s name as a writing credit. Rosco’s release in late 1959 rose to become a #2 hit on the Billboard R&B Chart in 1960.
“Just A Little Bit“ then became a blues standard and has been recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, The Animals, Them (with Van Morrison), Slade, Etta James and the Canadian band, The Powder Blues, among others.
