Natural disaster 14 July 2024 Chinese officials hurried to stop floods caused by a dam breach in central China. The breach occurred on a section of the embankment on the shore of Lake Dongting. This incident took place in Hunan Province, central China. Initially, there were no reports of casualties. However, the 226-meter breach forced nearly 6,000 people to evacuate from nearby areas. The National Road Monitoring Center reported traffic control on all roads leading to Hunan Province. During the control period, vehicle passage is prohibited except for those helping to prevent flooding. The President called for large-scale rescue and humanitarian efforts to protect lives and property. The Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched over 800 people. They also sent nearly 150 vehicles and dozens of boats to help block the breach. China is experiencing a summer of extreme weather conditions. Floods are affecting central and southern regions. Meanwhile, much of the north is suffering from intense heat waves. Seven major river basins in China are at risk of flooding in the upcoming flood season. This could lead to a complicated flood protection situation. A representative from the Ministry of Water Resources made this statement. Global warming has intensified the water cycle. It has increased the amount of saturated water vapor. With each degree Celsius rise in atmospheric temperature, water vapor content increases by 7 percent. This raises the likelihood of extreme rainfall, easily triggering floods. These events present a significant challenge for flood prevention and disaster relief. China has a large number of small and medium-sized reservoirs, dangerous reservoirs, and silt dams. Many of them have low flood resistance and pose significant flood control risks.
