Econtinuum - By Thijs Biersteker and Stefano Mancuso

Econtinuum by Thijs Biersteker and Stefano Mancuso These tree roots are communicating as if they were out there, beneath our feet in the forest. They are inviting us to take part in their conversation. The work uses sensors in the room to biomimic the root-communication between two trees using the co2, moist and Voc levels in the museum. By showing this symbiotic relation happening around us in nature, we teach the value of belonging to an ecosystem in eco-unfriendly times. The sensors and visitors in the museum room together steer the conversation between the two simple eco-A.I’s that control the work. Based on the scientific research in plant communication, the warning signals and nutrition flows go back and forth between the two enormous 3d printed root-systems. As visitors approach the artwork the roots respond to their presence. The particles and nutrition flows follow their every move and involve them in their biochemical conversation. Learn more : The wo
