What British colonialism did for Africa

One gains the impression that many young people in Britain today regard colonialism as an unmitigated evil and something of which they should be deeply ashamed; even though they know very little about it. To what extent though has the end of the British Empire benefited those whose countries are now ‘free’, especially the nations of Africa?
