The members of the Tesla board of directors were privately concerned that Elon Musk might have been under the influence of drugs when he tweeted in 2018 that he had been thinking about taking the electric vehicle company private, according to sources familiar with the discussions that were disclosed to The Wall Street Journal. A surprise announcement made by Musk on Twitter in August 2018 that he was “considering taking Tesla private at $420“ – a number that evokes marijuana — shocked shareholders. At the time, Musk was still serving as the chairman of Tesla. “Funding has been secured,“ he continued further. It was reported by The Journal that board members were taken aback by Musk’s message. This is in contrast to earlier reports that stated the Tesla CEO had brought up the issue to the board of directors of the firm a week prior to the tweet. According to a story from The Journal, it has now come to light that certain members of the board have quietly voiced their worries regarding the fact that Musk was tweeting while under the influence of drugs and have thought about requesting that he take a leave of absence. Musk stated that leading Tesla had been “excruciating“ and that the previous year had “been the most difficult and painful year“ of his career in an interview with The New York Times following the tweet. Musk expressed his sentiments in response to the statement. The interview also featured reports on how the board of directors of Tesla was concerned about Musk’s use of Ambien and whether or not it could be contributing to his habit of tweeting late at night. According to sources familiar with the matter who spoke with The Journal, Musk may have also been “under the influence“ during his interview with The Times. These sources also mentioned that Tesla’s communications team was unaware that Musk intended to meet with a reporter. Despite the fact that Musk has stated that he does not enjoy using illegal drugs, it is well known that the billionaire has used recreational drugs such as marijuana and small dosages of ketamine in order to cope with his depression.
