Prokudin-Gorsky 1909 Here I present an album of photographs by the pioneering Russian photographer, Sergey Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky of the former Leushinsky Convent located near the village of Leushino between Cherepovets and Rybinsk. Through the efforts of the Abbess (Mother Superior) Taisia, Leushinsky Convent became one of the three “Women’s laurels“ of Russia along with Diveevo & Shamordino. When these photographs were taken, the convent housed almost 700 nuns. Despite harassment to the nuns, by the Soviet authorities, the convent managed to survive until 1931 when it was closed. In 1935 the Volga River together with its tributaries, Sheksna and Mologa, was dammed at Rybinsk and the subsequent reservoir started filling in 1941 and continued until 1947. Thus the fate of the convent was sealed as the waters consumed the area.........
