City official accused of bear mace attack spree

A former San Francisco fire commissioner has been accused of attacking homeless people around the city for no well explained reason. The first accusation came during a trial accusing a homeless man, Garret Doty, of assaulting former fire commissioner Don Carmignani by beating him senseless with a lead pipe. However, Doty’s defense attorneys have uncovered several police reports that Carmignani has a penchant for approaching random homeless people and spraying them with bear mace, and that he was the one who initiated the confrontation. Carmignani was not specifically named in these reports, but a man matching his description was listed in each of the eight bear mace attacks, which occurred between November 2022 and January 2023. In one piece of footage, a man, allegedly Carmignani, is shown walking up to a sleeping homeless person and drenching them in mace. The defense also alleges that Carmignani once mugged a homeless woman, stealing her phone, her earrings and her wallet, before assaulting her dog. Carmignani ‘vehemently denies that he is the alleged individual who is committing these acts against homeless people.’
