Formed in 1990, the group’s line-up includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Justin Chancellor has been the band’s bassist since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D’Amour. Tool was described by Patrick Donovan of ’The Age’ as “the thinking person’s metal band. Cerebral and visceral, soft and heavy, melodic and abrasive, tender and brutal, familiar and strange, western and eastern, beautiful and ugly, taut yet sprawling and epic, they are a tangle of contradictions.“ In March 1992, Zoo released the band’s first effort, ’Opiate’. -Maynard James Keenan (Vocals) -Adam Jones (Guitar) -Justin Chancellor (Bass Guitar) -Danney Carey (Percussion) l Pneuma (πνεῦμα) is an ancient Greek word for “breath”, and in a religious context for “spirit” or “soul”. This song is a vivid reminder to us that being a human is not bound to the physical being. We are one word, we are “one spark beyond this flesh”. Also, this “Pneuma”, soul, spirit or breath is much more important than what we see and experience physically, as in the first lines we are asked to acknowledge it. Then further in the lyrics we “Children” as in innocents or ignorant about such an important concept, are asked to open our eyes to realize this wonder, to see the big picture, our spirits. This concept is indeed not new to Maynard’s lyrics throughout his career. l The album’s troubled history started after the tour cycle for ’10,000 Days’ ended with the band facing multiple personal, creative, and legal issues. The problems lasted up until 2018 when it was revealed that the band was in the studio and then the album’s mixes were finally completed in early 2019. During their show at Welcome to Rockville, they performed two brand new songs called “Descending” and “Invincible”. Following these shows, the band started their pre-release album tour where fans were able to notice a date for the album’s possible release date of August 30, 2019, which was later confirmed by the band’s vocalist Maynard James Keenan. The album title was finally announced on July 29, 2019, and it was later announced that the band’s entire catalog will finally be available on streaming sites later that week after years of being one of the few artists to not join the streaming age of music. In July 2019, when the album’s title ’Fear Inoculum’ was first announced, the word “inoculum” was the most searched word on the online Merriam Webster Dictionary. Keenan explains his interpretation of the title’s meaning: “It’s definitely a polar statement. It could be someone who’s been inoculated by fear.
