Greece rang in 2021 with a colourful fireworks display that lit up the night sky over the Acropolis in Athens. This year, however, despite the brilliant display, there were no crowds after Greece introduced a lockdown to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Greece has recorded more than 138,000 COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began, and more than 4,800 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
