Dating to season 1 in 1957, this episode of “The Silent Service“ is entitled “The Spearfish Delivers.“ The plot surrounds USS Spearfish, which is ordered to slip into Japanese-occupied Filipino waters to spirit out some important passengers from Corregidor. The episode was directed by Jean Yarbrough and written by host Thomas M. Dykers. The episode stars DeForest Kelley, Bing Russell, Adam Kennedy, Jimmy Cross, Ray Baker, Norman Leavitt, Wayne Mallory, John Mitchum, Peggy Stewart, Marjorie Owens and Clarence Lung. USS Spearfish (SS-190) was a Sargo-class submarine. On the night 3 May, 1941, the submarine slipped into Manila Bay and picked up 14 nurses, and several staff officers from Corregidor. She was the last American submarine to visit that beleaguered fortress before it surrendered. Navy nurse and Legion of Merit recipient Ann A. Bernatitus was among the 27 rescued by Spearfish. The submarine survived the war and was scrapped in October 1947. Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
