Spiral Lakeside House in Japan

Situated on the tranquil shores of the picturesque Lake Chuzenji, the On The Water House is an architectural masterpiece that enchants and surprises all those fortunate enough to visit. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, this lakeside residence in Japan offers an exclusive and immersive summer retreat, providing guests with a cinematic experience of its breathtaking and expansive natural landscape. The house stands as a testament to Nikken Sekkei’s skill in harmonizing exterior construction with interior design. The architecture of this house is truly unique, featuring a spiral form that unfolds from the entrance to the bedrooms. As visitors explore its spaces, they are treated to ever-changing views of the lake, creating an almost ritualistic experience. The entrance, inspired by traditional teahouse paths, invites visitors on a ceremonial journey. As they progress, they are greeted by a breathtaking backdrop, with panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The house unfolds into carefully designed spaces, such as the dining room, where guests can savor the sunset through an expansive glass wall. Upon entry, guests are welcomed by a cozy atmosphere and a spectacular view. The corridors extend toward the lake, each leading to a uniquely configured room. Continuity of space is a striking feature, where doors are eliminated or concealed to create a sense of fluidity. Guests are invited to relax on zabutons (floor cushions) and choose the most comfortable spot to enjoy the captivating views. The architecture incorporates the lake’s breeze, providing natural airflow and creating warm and cool areas for guests to choose from, much like cats seeking the most pleasant spot.
