The Varsity Sports (1928)

Athletes from Oxford and Cambridge University compete in the ’Varsity Sports’. No titles. Queen’s Club, London. M/S in slow-motion shows a man taking the high jump before a crowd of people; the man lands on his feet in the sand the other side. Two pole-vaulters take a jump in slow-motion; the second clears the line, but his pole knocks it off. L/S (normal speed) of men running around a track. Another group of men are seen at the starting blocks; they set off and jump hurdles around the track at a terrific speed. M/S of one of the athletes (this is probably JWJ Rinkel, who won the quarter mile and 100 yards races). Intertitle reads: “G.C. Weightman Smith... broke record in 15 2/5 secs. in low hurdles and also won 120 yards hurdles.“ (Shot missing from this story - it actually turns up as the first shot after the titles in the next story on this tape - ’Headship of the River’.)
