Constructed during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus around 280 BC, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was situated on the small island of Pharos, which was connected to the city of Alexandria by a causeway known as the Heptastadion. The design of the lighthouse was attributed to the Greek architect Sostratus of Cnidus, though much of what we know comes from later historical accounts.
