About:
This process initially took 9 hours. Rebecca get up at 11:30 PM, and would come to set at midnight (3 AM after process shortened) for a 9 AM call time. For the first movie, it was done six times. By the end, it was shortened by several hours less. Watch the video to learn how it was done! At the time, this was a groundbreaking technology, and it still holds up even 20 years later. The prosthetics were used a minimum of 2 times, max 4. Twice for Rebecca, twice for stunt double.
QA with Gordon Smith from original video:
The word “bloodstream“, is misleading and how false rumours get started. She would have had to be coughing up blood, which would have sent her to the hospital.
Instead, she coughed up blue paint from her sinuses and lungs., just like everyone else in that room did. Why? We were spraying paint particles suspended alcohol into the air for hours every day she played the character. It made me angry because it did not have to be. My original design coloured her skin with cosmetic grade food colouring, water and a sea-sponge, for a naturally translucent skin, just a deep blue, like Mystique’s skin would be if she were real, not opaque like a comic-book character.
The prosthetics were self-sticking, meaning they could be peeled off and reapplied, multiple times, safely, with no adhesives. Personal parts of the prosthetic were changed every day.
(Only tested and photographed on a model, never on Rebecca)
Drink means alcohol. If one has had a lot to drink the night before, for example, the next day the skin is oily, as part of the process of expelling the alcohol, acting as a lubricant. It can be cleaned from the surface but the skin keeps creating it until the body has finished processing it. This is a standard problem in all prosthetic application. However in our case it was not a problem for the prosthetics, it was a problem for the body paint, makeup, or glue where we had to us it.
Not flying? Makes no sense, unless you are heavily drinking on the flight.
Rebecca may well have shaved as woman do, but it was not an issue for our prosthetics. We always clean the skin with alcohol before any application as a matter of practice, but not sticking was never an issue.
Not clear what you mean by one method over the other. If you mean glue or no glue. What would you glue something that does not need to be glued? If you mean latex foam or a silicone gel. Only one works.
My call time was at midnight to be ready at 9 am. It was a nine-hour makeup process. We did, over the course of three movies, manage to get it down to seven hours, but that was still ... It was a big deal,“ Romijn recalled. “I realized pretty early on that was the job. I was getting paid to be a part of that makeup put on! It’s a funny thing. When you’re painted, you feel completely covered up.
It was the most beautiful costume I’ve ever seen in my life. Every single time they finished, and I would look in the mirror, I would just look at it like it was a masterpiece,“ Romijn revealed to Looper. “I treasure it now, because hindsight is 20/20, and I don’t remember how painful it was, but I really appreciate everything that came from that, really ... It was worth every single second of all that, of all those 11:30 pm wake-up calls to go to the set. I would try and go to bed at 7:30 or 8AM and just lay there, and then I would have to get up at 11:30PM and go to work, and work for 24 hours straight.
