Visit This 1960s Navy film looks at the flight test and weapons testing of the Sikorsky Sea Dragon Helicopter HSS-2 or S-2 at the U.S. Navy’s Flight Test Center at Patuxent River, Maryland. This helicopter was later redesignated as the S-61 / SH-3 Sea King. The helicopter is shown tested in multiple conditions including at night, in heavy winds, and on an aircraft carrier. There is also footage of the helicopter breaking the world helicopter speed record. The USS Lake Champlain is also shown (CV-39) in its role as an anti-submarine warfare platform. A landmark design, it was one of the first ASW rotorcraft to use turboshaft engines. The project was originally designated S-61 and the HSS-2 prototype (shown in the film) flew on 11 March 1959. The prototype was followed by seven pre-production aircraft (YHSS-2) which successfully completed service trials in 1960. The US Navy ordered the first ten S-61B/HSS-2 for delivery starting in September 1961. The helicopters were later redesignated SH-3A Sea King.
