This magnificent piece, part of the Leipzig Chorales, showcases Bach’s unparalleled genius in expressive harmony. Its gentle beauty may quietly lift your spirits. In Bach’s “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr“ BWV 663, the chorale melody is uniquely positioned in the tenor voice, symbolizing Jesus between heaven and earth. Written in 3/2 time, akin to many Passion-related chorales and the Crucifixus from the Mass in B minor, the piece features the cantus firmus briefly rising above the upper parts to signify Jesus’ heavenly dominion. Near the end, after a florid solo, the music dramatically pauses on the word ’Not’ (need) before leading to a radiant conclusion with ’erbarm dich unser aller’ accompanied by an additional figured part.
