In this video (Part 3 of a 5-part series), we go over developments in British Indian rule between the late 18th - early 19thC, key amongst them the creation of an ’Indian gentry’ class and the attempt to inject European norms into what was still a feudal society. Throughout this period, British officials struggled to govern in a way that would fulfill several competing impulses: Enlightenment idealism, colonial exploitation, and practical politics. The result was a hugely contradictory legacy which both cast the subcontinent into grinding poverty, and also laid the groundwork for it to eventually emerge into so-called ’modernity’.
