Chess Table | Padauk and Curly Maple

In this video, I make a chess table made from padauk and curly maple. The chess table is 30“ x 30“ x 30“ high. The squares are 2 3/8“ and they have a 1/8“ brass border around the playing field. The client’s surname is Aldridge which is engraved with gold leaf on the frame. The table has the letter “A“ for the feet that are 4“ high. The legs (without the feet) are approximately “ long and I tapered them using a jointer, which is a pretty cool way to get precise and repeatable tapers. The chess board and the frame around the table top is 1 1/4“ thick. The chess board is removable to make it easy to play elsewhere. When inset in the table, the frame around the chess board and the frame around the table leaves approximately 5 1/2“ for a clock, notepad, and pieces that are out of play. There is a drawer on each player side. The drawer boxes are assembled with box joints that have alternating colors of red (padauk) and white (ash) to simulate chess squares. Each drawer has a different colored drawer pull (maple and wenge). The chess board frame has algebraic notation in upper case that is inlaid with maple. I’ve had great success using Starbond’s CA glues and that’s what I used to adhere the brass border to the frame.
