This historical film “NATO: The Changed Face of Europe“ was part of the “Big Picture“ series presented by the United States Army. Dating to 1964, this film introduces viewers to NATO, the reasons that led to its creation, and the goals NATO seeks to accomplish.

(07:27) In Czechoslovakia, a coup in February 1948 led to the deposition of president Edvard Beneš who then died in exile
(08:17) All the remaining ministers were Communist except for Jan Masaryk who died under suspicious circumstances in March 1948.
(08:38) Masaryk’s funeral. Many believe he was murdered while others maintain he committed suicide.
(09:22) The Greek Civil War between the state and communists waged from 1946 to 1949. It is considered the first post-WWII proxy war.
(11:07) Secretary of State George C. Marshall speaks to Congress about his proposal to increase foreign aid to Western Europe through the Marshall Plan.
(11:43) President Harry Truman addresses Congress and positions the Marshall Plan as the solution to Europe’s strife.

(12:45) The Marshall Plan helped deliver food to Europeans
(14:04) Tractors were delivered to Turkey
(14:15) and steel to Italy as part of a plan to revitalize the economy.

(14:58) It led to leftist riots, strikes, and sabotage
(15:34) The signing of the Brussels Treaty was a major step in uniting Europe, even if only five countries signed the treaty.
(15:59) Berlin was occupied by French, British, American, and Russian troops.
(16:10) Military police in front of the Brandenburg Gate. The situation had become increasingly tense and untenable.
(17:07) The signing of the North American Treaty which established NATO.
(17:31) Soviet parades protest NATO’s establishment.
(18:21) Eisenhower was NATO’s first supreme commander and moved to Paris.
(18:35) Military personnel from across the North Atlantic region worked on building shared defensive capabilities.
(19:01) The combination of NATO and the Marshall Plan led to the delivery of both food and weapons to European ports.
(19:26) Soldiers from the United States and Canada mobilized to Europe to support the mobilization efforts.
(19:56) American farmers visit French farms.
(21:03) The Council of Europe held meetings in Strasbourg. The council had no power besides advising governments.
(22:33) The European Community of Coal and Steel was established in 1951 to integrate the six countries’ industries into a single common market.

(23:41) The Federal Republic of Germany joined the alliance in 1955, placing the republic firmly in the western bloc
