Why are Unnecessary Pelvic Exams Being Performed on Young Women?

A new study suggests millions of women may have been receiving unnecessary pelvic exams and pap smears. OB/GYN Dr. Tristan Emily Bickman shares the study spanned 6 years which looked at women aged 15-20. She shares that it’s not medically necessary to get an exam in order to get birth control, but most women do get an exam in order to get contraception. Dr. Bickman shares that young women should know they don’t need an exam to get help for an STI or to get birth control, and to have a conversation with their doctor about when it is medically necessary.
