A brief history of sounds popular in the township shebeens of South Africa 1972-2021 with kyle.
“I am a multi-genre music collector, but House, Broken Beats and poly-rhythmic percussion is where you’ll find me.
I grew up in 90’s South Africa and this is just a small sample of the musical variety I was exposed to while following my dad around the township we lived in as he socialised w/ family, friends and colleagues. Sadly many of the genre’s that emerged while I was growing up were not pressed onto vinyl so we’re missing so much music from the post-1999 Kwaito and pre-2015 afro house eras, but here I managed to squeeze in 45 mins from 1970’s Afro Rock (popular in Zimbabwe) to 1980’s bubblegum/synth disco all the way to modern day Qgom and Amapiano. “
