The Expendables 4 VFX Breakdown by WorldWide FX

We’re thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes look at our extensive VFX work on The Expendables 4. This project was more than a year in the making, and we had the privilege of collaborating with the exceptionally talented director, Scott Waugh, whose expertise was invaluable throughout. The project involved a whopping 1,500 VFX shots, with WWFX handling 897. We also partnered with other renowned VFX studios such as NBFX in Portugal, FX3X, AXIS, and Peerless. Our team at WWFX was led by the VFX supervisor Vesselina Hary Georgieva and was responsible for two major sequences: the Libyan desert factory and the Mercenaries ship Jintara. In the Libyan desert factory, we had to create both the factory itself and the surrounding environment. The most challenging shots featured a massive plane colliding with the factory, requiring intricate pyro simulations. Crafting the desert environment alone took six months, incorporating elements like sand dunes, rocky mountains, greenery, ruins, and various vehicles. The Mercenaries ship Jintara sequence involved building a colossal cargo ship with over 500 props, only to spectacularly destroy it in a massive explosion. This sequence featured 40 full CG shots, many of them involving complex water and pyro simulations. We’re incredibly proud of our work, as it allowed us to push the boundaries of innovation while delivering convincingly photo-realistic shots. Check out our VFX breakdown video to see the magic behind the scenes! he Expendables 4 is directed by Scott Waugh. With Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, 50 Cent, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren.
