Lecce, located in Puglia’s Salento Peninsula, is one of the region’s most popular destinations in Italy, and with good reason. Lecce is perhaps the most culturally diverse town in the region, with its architecture reflecting the influences of the various cultures that have settled there – from ancient austere monasteries to the most luxurious and state-of-the-art hotels in Puglia. One of the oldest structures, a huge Roman amphitheatre, dates back to the first century. However, amidst impressive architecture spanning the ages, it is a more recent architectural movement that placed Lecce on the map, so to speak. Dubbed the ‘Florence of the Baroque, this ‘pink and gold city’ is known for the ornate and extravagant facades of buildings created from the local honey-coloured sandstone. The intricacy of the designs, reminiscent of the Baroque style, has given rise to a new movement called Barocco Leccese. Some have even gone so far as to claim that Lecce is the prettiest city in Italy.
