Emelie Waldken provides an overview of halling, this impressive folk dance found mostly in Norway and associated with vibrating, intense music. Some tips on how to play this music are also given.
INFOS
Halling dance = lausdans (in Valdres and Hallingdal)
Some of my favourite halling dancers :
- Torkjell L. Børsheim (Erlend Viken is playing) :
- Anton Schneider (here on a polska ^^) :
- Anna Öberg :
- Not sure, but I think it’s Martin Myhr :
Traditional instruments to play halling : fiddle, Hardingfele, singing/trall, jew’s harp, percussions, langeleik...
Halling is modal music, lydian mode being very common.
- Rhythmical type nr.1 : “proper halling type“ in 2/4, 4/4 and with variations, for example 5/4. Tune : halling efter Per Myhr från Härjedalen, Sweden
