Why is Britain buying gas, rather than drilling for it in our own territory?

There are huge reserves of natural gas in the North Sea and also a lot can be obtained by fracking for shale gas. Instead, we are buying it from all over the world. This is very expensive and of course the price of gas bought from abroad has quadrupled in the last year.
