Making a 5-Piece Packrafting Paddle & Trekking Pole from a 2-Piece Paddle
I turned a 2-piece carbon fiber kayak paddle into a lightweight 5-piece packrafting paddle that converts into a trekking pole.
Math: I wanted the paddle blades to be at a 30 degree angle from each other for better performance in headwinds, so I calculated the length of a 30 degree arc on the outside of the paddle shaft using the formula for the circumference of a circle C=pi*D (where C is the circumference, D is the diameter, and pi is approximately ). Since there are 360 degrees in a circle, I multiplied the circumference by 30/360 (i.e. divided by 12) to get the offset distance. It worked out to about 8 mm.
