After 10 years of struggle, she was permitted to travel outside the Soviet Union, and defected to marry a pianist she had met at the competition. Tuesday, as a Belgian citizen, she made her New York debut at Town Hall. She did not make a strong impression, and (knowing of her earlier successes) one began speculating on reasons.
