This band was originally formed in the mid-60s when drummer Don Powell and guitarrist Dave Hill recruited singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea for their band. They were first the ’N Betweens, then changed to “Ambrose Slade“ and later “Slade“ in 1970. Their first album as Slade called “Play It Loud“, released in 1970, pretty much flopped. It was their single ’Cuz I Luv You’ which helped them to their breakthrough in 1971 as the song became #1 in the UK Single Charts and also topped the charts in Ireland. They were able to repeat the success with “Take Me Back ’Ome’ - another #1 single in the UK. In 1972 the released a live-album ’Slayed Alive’ which peaked at #2 in the UK. Later that year they released their next studio album ’Slayed?’ which topped the charts in the UK and Australia. It included another one single called ’Mama Weer All Crazee Now’. They released additional singles in 1973 called ’Cum On Feel The Noize’ and later ’Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me’ which both also topped the UK Single Charts.
At the end of the year the group released a Christmas song called ’Merry Xmas Everybody’ which became their 6th and final charttopper in their homecountry. The song to this day makes his yearly appearance at the UK single charts when Christmas season arrives. The band also released a compilation album named ’Sladest’ which topped the UK album charts. In 1974 they released their next studio album ’Old New Borrowed And Blue’ which also reached #1 in their homecountry. Later that year they released another album named ’Slade In Flame’ and it peaked at #6. It seemed like their time in the sun was over and Slade tried without success to gain traction in the USA.
In the 80s the band was able to make a short-lived comeback. In 1983 they released the single ’My Oh My’ which peaked at #2 in the UK and became a European-wide hit. It also peaked at #37 in the USA, their best result for them so far, but they were even able to top it with their follow-up single ’Run Runaway’ which peaked at #20 in the USA and #7 in the UK. In the 90s they had one more moderate successful song with ’Radio Wall Of Sound’ before Holder and then Lea both left the band in 1992. The group continued in different formations and names (’Slade II’) but never gained any chart-traction again.
