These models are called FeTAp, which is a cute abbreviation for the typical super-long-german word “Fernsprechtischapparat“. 2. The stutter FX on the vocals in the very beginning and in the break before the last chorus are made with the telephone’s rotary dial. Most of these phones put a fast on-off-on-off tremolo/stutter FX on the input signal by using the rotary dial, in this case: on Chris’ voice. 3. Yes, this is a live vocal performance, it’s not faked. But Chris is singing in the wrong side of telephone handset, you say, it ms be fake? No! When Chris have started to convert old telephones to working microphones at Chameleon Studios Hamburg, he included a little trick here: If you want to use the telephone by singing in its microphone, you need to activate 48 volts of so called “Phantom Power“ at the microphone pre amp. What you get is a very hot signal with a quite harsh and distorted sound. If you’re NOT activating 48V, you can use the telephone’s SPEAKER as a microphone (like in this video). What you get is a much more mellow sound and a quieter signal. Chris has rebuilt like 100 of these phones from the 50s to the 90s.
